If desired, the RailCATs can venture outside of the rail corridor to run on city streets, or anywhere that space allows. All it takes is a 5-foot dedicated lane. The possibilities are endless:
- Add a Cabrillo College loop
- Add a Capitola Mall loop
- Add loops to transit stations in Santa Cruz and Watsonville
- Add longer loops to serve each city and/or UCSC
- Use Freedom Blvd as an alternative route to connect Watsonville to Aptos prior to upgrading the rail corridor for RailCAT service (if space allows)
We are investigating the feasibility of operating CAT vehicles on the freeway, as a possible lower-cost alternative to upgrading the rail corridor.
HouseCAT
As self-driving technology continues to advance, we expect that RailCAT vehicles can eventually offer door-to-door service as depicted below. This feature is not yet available, and we don’t know when or if it will be feasible.
